On August 16th, 2022, NYCHA tenants from UFAD sent petitions opposing the privatization of NYCHA to local and state politicians and NYCHA officials.
The petition was signed by 218 tenants of Manhattanville Houses in West Harlem, 74 tenants of Jackie Robinson Houses in East Harlem, and 81 community members
Almost two months later, we have received NO response from: Mayor Eric Adams, NYCHA CEO Greg Russ, New York Senators Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, Congressman Adriano Espaillat, State Senator Cordell Cleare, State Assemblymember Inez Dickens, all New York City Councilmembers, and Manhattan Borough President Mark Levine
On September 18th, at the African American Day Parade in Harlem, we asked politicians where they stand on NYCHA tenants’ fight against the privatization of public housing by PACT, the new Public Housing Preservation Trust, or any other privatization scheme.
A few said they supported tenants who oppose privatization, but have since ignored us after we asked them to release a public statement.Others refused to say anything to support tenants. One was bold enough to lie to our faces and say that NYCHA isn’t being privatized.
